J. Michael Brinkman Scholarship Fund
Michael Brinkman was a leading figure in Hollywood’s broadcast and post production communities and a founding member of the Hollywood Post Alliance. Michael spent 16 years with Panasonic and prior to that was an award-winning producer/director working in documentary and educational production. Michael spent his professional life helping others understand technology in the service of the creative endeavor. His contagious enthusiasm and willingness to mentor touched many lives. In his memory we hope to continue his legacy to the industry and the people who choose to make it their career.
Mission Statement:
To promote scholarship in the art and science of Post Production.
Criteria for Applying:
Application is open to an individual who works and lives, or intends to after finishing school, in Southern California and is a U.S. citizen or has the legal right to work in the United States. Applicant must also meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Currently working in the post production industry in a creative, business, technical or engineering role and looking to advance their career
- Currently working in the entertainment industry and looking to cross over into a post production career
- Student working toward a degree, taking a minimum of 9 college credits, with a strong interest in a career in post production or an individual accepted at or attending a licensed post secondary institution.
Scholarship Awards:
The awards will provide diversified educational opportunities which will vary from year to year.
The application process and scholarship awards will be conducted annually as announced during the year.
2010 Awards:
- Conference Registration for the 2011 HPA Tech Retreat®, February 15-18 in Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs area) plus $500 towards the cost of transportation and lodging. We encourage individuals working in a technical capacity in post production to apply for this award (first time Retreat attendees only, please). - Up to five (5) Scholarship Awards of $1000 each to be given to the college or university where award winner is currently enrolled, on their behalf, to cover tuition or related educational costs.
- Up to five (5) $250 awards to the nominating instructor of each of the students who win a Scholarship Award to be used for scholarly activity such as books, research materials, or equipment.

Submissions accepted May 1 – June 18, 2010. Awards will be announced on or about July 30, 2010.
All awards are at the sole discretion of the J. Michael Brinkman Scholarship Committee and HPA.
