Citizens for Global Solutions Internship
| Wanted: Smart, creative, energetic interns seeking a substantive, international issues focused internship in grassroots activism, research, lobbying, and media/communications. We look for strong written and verbal communication skills, a positive attitude, and high self-motivation. |
We offer substantive internships to undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates in our National Office in Washington, DC. All our internships are substantive and challenging.
With more than 25,000 supporters nationwide and over a 60 year history, Citizens for Global Solutions staff, interns, and member activists carry out advocacy on issues within our program areas.
Citizens for Global Solutions envisions and advocates:
A Secure World where the U.S. works as an equal partner alongside friends and allies to tackle issues such as terrorism, genocide, and failed states;
A Connected World where Americans recognize and address the inevitable local impact of seemingly distant global issues;
A Livable World where all nations, including the U.S., work with international instutions to reduce global poverty and tackle international health and environmental threats such as avian flu and climate change; and
A Just World where those guilty of the most heinous crimes such as ethnic cleansing, torture, and sexual slavery are held criminally accountable, and legal mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court serve as a powerful deterrent for future war criminals.
Duties include:
- Attending coalition meetings and/or meetings with Congressional staffers on Capitol Hill.
- Writing press releases, fact sheets, and/or briefing papers
- Analyzing the voting patterns of Congress in regards to select international related votes
- Following election campaigns & Communicating with candidate election committees
- Creating, writing, and backstopping electronic advocacy initiatives (on-line petitions, etc.)
- Update the Global Solutions website
- Helping with membership development (mailings, some phone work, etc…)
Requirements:
- Passion for learning and an interest in international issues
- Knowledge of U.S. politics and/or international affairs and/or journalism OR
- Interest/training in Electronic Advocacy/IT technology
- Excellent writing and oral communication skills
- General computer skills, some knowledge of HTML or FrontPage is a plus but not required
In addition to the many duties listed above, interns will learn much about current events and issues within each of our major program areas.
In addition, interns can learn about and work on the Citizens for Global Solutions Political Action Committee. This PAC is a nonpartisan membership-based advocacy organization that gets into the thick of things during a congressional election year. Staff and interns also regularly lobby members of the U.S. Congress and the Administration to support issues such as timely payments of U.S. assessments to the U.N., U.S. participation in U.N. peacekeeping missions, support for increased U.N. conflict prevention action capabilities, and U.S. participation in the International Criminal Court.
