This scholarship is not a traditional scholarship taken with successful instructional success and financial need. Applicant must (1) download and print the Scholarship application and two blank recommendation forms from this website (see application page); (2) complete application; (3) give recommendation forms to teachers or other individuals who will complete them; and (4) mail the application along with two letters of recommendation, a transcript of grades, financial information, and letter of acceptance from college (if applicable), to the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, postmarked by April, 30, 2014. Selection of Recipients
The Selection Committee will select the applicants who show the most promise as innovative, creative problem solvers, on the basis of their essays, letters of recommendation, and other information included with the application. Academic and extracurricular information play an important secondary role in helping the Committee get a fuller picture of the applicant, but these are not the basis on which the scholarship is awarded. Financial need does not play a role in determining the selection of applicants. After the scholarship recipients are selected, the amount of each award is determined solely on the basis of financial need.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to decide, on a case-by-case basis, to contact applicants for phone interviews or to request additional materials. Applicants should not assume they have not won the scholarship if they are not contacted for an interview. Applicants will be notified by mail in late August whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship.
Payment of Scholarships
On behalf of the Renée B. Fisher Foundation, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven will process scholarship awards and mail them to the recipients undergraduate educational institution. Checks will be made payable jointly to the student and the school and must be endorsed by both.
High school juniors who win the Milton Fisher Scholarship will not receive their checks until they enroll in their post-secondary degree program (typically one year later).
Recipients are required to supply the Community Foundation with current transcripts and to notify the Community Foundation of any changes in school address, school enrollment, or other relevant information. At the end of each academic year, they are obligated to provide evidence that they remain students in good standing at the educational institution in which they are enrolled, and are also obligated to provide a paragraph describing their activities over the previous year.
